Tenders Called for Bunbury Radiotherapy

Health Minister Kim Hames today announced tenders have been called for the planned $15.2million radiotherapy centre to be built at the South West Health Campus in Bunbury.

“The new Bunbury radiotherapy centre will mean the majority of cancer patients in the South-West will no longer have to travel to Perth for radiotherapy treatment, but will be able to remain closer to their homes and the support of their families and friends,” Dr Hames said.

Jointly funded by Federal and State Governments, the centre is expected to initially cater for about 400 patients a year, rising to more than 600 by 2020.

Margaret Turner, a representative of the South West District Health Advisory Council on the Project Working Group values the opportunity to be involved in planning and design stages of the project. “Being able to provide a community perspective and feedback, and see action taken as a result, has been very important.”

Construction is expected to be completed by March 2011, with the new service operational by mid-2011.

Further information on the planned radiotherapy centre is available on the Health Department’s website.
