Towtruck Honeypot at Forest Highway Intersection

There have been seven motor vehicle crashes at the intersection of Old Coast Road and Forrest Highway in the three months since the new road was opened in September.

The latest accident on Tuesday claimed the lives of two people and put several others in hospital.

Despite feedback from Traffic Police that south-bound drivers are becoming confused while negotiating the northbound lanes of Forrest Highway, a spokesman for the Main Roads Department Murray Cowper today declared the design of the three way intersection to be sound.

Mr Cowper is Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Transport and Murray Wellington MLA Simon O’Brien.

“Main Roads officers were at the intersection last Friday installing ‘T-junction ahead’ warning signs and an additional ‘give way’ sign. Since then we have had this awful tragedy and Main Roads and police have responded quickly and appropriately” Mr Cowper said.

In a joint decision between Main Roads and Police on Thursday, further work including additional signs and pavement markings will be carried out to improve the intersection.

“Works will begin today and be completed next week. Driver behaviour at the intersection will be closely monitored in ensuing months.”
