As part of a strategy to better utilise existing housing stock and reduce wait lists for public housing, the Department of Housing and Works has recently purchased a 32-unit seniors’ accommodation complex in Bunbury.
The purchase was funded by Federal Government money from the Social Housing – National Partnership Agreement. Housing and Works Minister Troy Buswell made the announcement last Friday while visiting the complex, located in Picton Road, East Bunbury.
“This purchase will go a long way to addressing the demand in Bunbury for housing for the over 55s age group and will also allow the department to better utilise its resources in the area.” Mr Buswell said.
“Seniors who are living in larger family homes in Bunbury will be offered accommodation in the new units, which will free up larger family-style homes for families on the public housing waiting list.”
“Our intention is that once the purchase settles it will be handed over to a community housing service provider to manage the tenancies.” Mr Buswell said.
It remains to be seen whether the smell of fresh paint will be enough to lure people out of their existing accommodation and away from long term neighbours.
