The City of Bunbury is promoting cut-price veterinary services for the month of August, as part of a campaign to sterilise as many cats as possible.
A similar campaign last year saw more than 160 cats sterilised, and Community Law and Safety Manager John Kowal is hoping for a similar result this year.
“Sterilised cats rarely cause problems in the community and make very good, low impact pets but
the same can’t be said for un-sterilised cats. ” said Mr Kowal. “Generally, un-sterilised cats are not confined so they are more likely to be the ones that spray and fight especially at night and this often causes friction between neighbours.”
“Un-sterilised cats also contribute to the problem of overpopulation leaving vets and welfare
agencies to destroy thousands of excess cats each year.” Mr Kowal said.
Substantial discounts are being offered to Bunbury residents by three local vets for cat sterilisation and microchipping, and the project also provides transport and cage lending to assist people in transporting their pets.
